Urbana police charge son in killing of his father

UPDATE @8:15 p.m.: A 38-year-old man has been charged with two counts of murder and felonious assault in the death of his father, who was found dead Sunday night in his home on South Kenton Street.

Urbana Police Chief Mett Lingrell said the charges against Christopher Myers were filed following the completion of a forensic autopsy on 65-year-old Jerald Myers, performed Monday afternoon at the Montgomery County Coroner's Office.

Urbana police were assisted by agents from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

The charges against Myers are in addition to felonious assault and felony domestic violence charges police filed against him earlier Monday. Those initial charges stem from actions Christopher Myers took against his brother, 36-year-old Brian Myers, who lives on West Reynolds Street in Urbana.

Christopher Myers is being detained in the Tri-County Jail.

His initial appearance in Champaign Municipal Court is scheduled for Tuesday morning.

Police in Urbana are now calling a suspicious death discovered Sunday night a homicide and have released the victim's identity.

Jerald L. Myers, 65, was found dead inside his home in the 500 block of South Kenton Street, according to a release from Urbana police.

Investigators are waiting to learn more from the crime scene processing and results from the autopsy.

The death is being investigated as a homicide, but police have not released any details on the manner of death, evidence or what witnesses are reporting.

A resident of the home, 38-year-old Christopher L. Myers, was arrested at the scene for actions he took against his brother during the discovery of the death, according to the release.

Chris Myers is being held in the Tri-County Jail on suspicion of felonious assault and domestic violence. Police did not disclose his apparent relation to the deceased victim.

Officers responded to a report of a person injured inside the home shortly before 9 p.m.

Urbana Police Chief Matt Lingrell said officers discovered a deceased adult male in the upstairs portion of the home.

Police are interviewing witnesses and people who knew the man and have called in assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

Lingrell said he expected the investigation would last into the overnight hours.

Any updated information is not expected to be released until the morning.
