James Quinn, 50, of Springfield was convicted Tuesday, a day and a half into his jury trial, of all charges in the kidnapping and beating of his elderly mother in December.
Appearing in Clark County Common Pleas Court, Quinn was sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of two counts of domestic violence, two counts of kidnapping, as well as abduction and intimidation of an attorney, victim or witness in a criminal case.
According to an affidavit, police were called to the Walmart on Bechtle Avenue on Dec. 14, on a report that an elderly woman there had been beaten by her son.
The woman told police that her son, James Quinn, was upset with her for calling the police earlier in the evening. To protect herself, she locked herself in her bedroom, but Quinn forced open the door, grabbed her by the arms and forced her into her car. When she tried to open the door to get out, she said her son threatened to kill her.
Quinn then drove her to a bridge and made her get out of the car, she said. He told her he would force her to jump from the bridge or push her off the bridge if she didn't recant an earlier statement she made to police.
When she agreed to recant the statement, they got back into the car and drove toward Walmart.
During the drive, the woman said Quinn struck her on the head repeatedly and grabbed her by her hair.
Quinn left his mother in the car while he went into Walmart, threatening to kill her if she got out of the car, according to the affidavit.
The woman did manage to get out of the car and asked a store employee in the parking lot for help.
Quinn returned to the scene and tried to pull his mother away from the employee, but was unable to do so.
Quinn drove off and the employee took the mother into the store where they called police.
The mother was treated for injuries that included swelling and bruising of the forehead and the arm.
