Person, dog injured in Vandalia situation; suspect briefly barricades inside apartment

VANDALIA — UPDATE @ 6:51 a.m.:

One person and one dog were injured in a domestic situation that led to a person barricading themselves in an apartment, according to police.

Officers said that the injured person was taken to the hospital, and the injured dog was taken to a vet and is expected to be okay.

After the dog was injured, a person ran into the street to ask for help.

When police arrived, they said the suspect barricaded themselves in the apartment, but dispatchers were eventually able to calm them down and get them to come out.

Police said that although there may be charges in the future, they did not take the person who barricaded themselves in the apartment into custody. That person was not injured.

UPDATE @ 5:58 a.m.:

One person has been taken to the hospital from the apartments in the 200 block of South Dixie Drive, according to Vandalia dispatch records. However, it is still unclear what happened.

Our crew on the scene reported that a number of cruisers left, but there are still officers at the apartment complex.

UPDATE @ 5:04 a.m.:

Police said that nobody has been injured in the 200 block of South Dixie Drive, but that officers were attempting to get someone to come out of an apartment.

When our crew arrived on scene, they were asked to move as someone had a firearm. After moving, our photographer spoke to medics staged nearby who said they were there for a potential assault victim.

We are trying to find out more specifically what is going on.

Police and medics are responding to a report of a stabbing in the 200 block of South Dixie Drive in Vandalia.
