BELLBROOK — Bellbrook police are investigating several instances of fake money orders received through the mail in the Bellbrook area.
One Bellbrook resident received a money order in the mail for $978, along with a note that instructed them to cash the money, then buy iTunes gift cards, send back the security codes of the cards, and then receive a large portion of the check back. The resident went to the police, who recognized it as fake immediately, according to Lieut. Steve Carmin.
“They may send out thousands of these,” Lt. Carmin said. “They may get one out of every one hundred or one out of every one thousand, but they’re making a lot of money, selling iTunes cards, in this case, back.”
The police investigation into the suspect has returned fake phone numbers and addresses. The original money order was sent via U.S. Postal Service “Express Mail”.
The suspect could face felony charges if found, but Bellbrook police said that it’s very difficult to catch suspects like this.
