Dayton man indicted for reckless homicide in shooting at friend’s house

A 51-year-old Dayton man is charged with reckless homicide in the shooting death of Mario Senter last week.

Frederick Williams was indicted today on reckless homicide and tampering with evidence by a Montgomery County grand jury.

Williams was inside a friend’s Benning Place home on Dec. 23, 2016, when prosecutors said he “was recklessly handling a firearm. As a result of his conduct, the firearm discharged, striking and killing 43-year-old Mario A. Senter of Dayton.”

Williams is being held on a $250,000 bond in the Montgomery County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, according to court and jail records.

Dayton police have one person in custody and are searching for two others in what is unofficially the city’s 41st homicide of 2016.

Mario A. Senter, 43, of Dayton, was identified Friday afternoon by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office. Police said he was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital after reportedly being shot. Senter's death was ruled a homicide caused by a gunshot wound, a spokesman for the coroner said.

A Dayton police spokeswoman said one person had been arrested in connection with Senter’s killing, but not officially charged for the homicide at 71 Benning Place at 1:30 a.m. Friday. Police will meet with prosecutors in the coming days to file official charges.

Police did not identify the person apprehended.

Montgomery County Jail records indicate that a Frederick B. Williams, 51, was booked in on potential murder charges at 9:44 a.m. Friday.

Dayton police Lt. Mark Ponichtera said Friday morning that one man called a person of interest was cooperating with investigators. That person told police that there were other people inside the apartment when Senter was shot.

Police said they are looking for two other men believed to be involved, but their whereabouts and descriptions were unknown.

Dayton had 29 homicides in 2015 and 27 each in 2014, 2013 and 2012. There were 36 homicides in 2011, 35 in 2010 and 40 in 2009. There were 42 homicides in Dayton in both 2002 and 2006.
