Police arrest Indiana State shooting suspect

UPDATE @ 9:45 p.m. Sept. 28:

Police have made an arrest in the Indiana State University shooting Saturday that sent one student to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Calvin McCauley, 21, of Indianapolis, was arrested Sunday on a preliminary charge of attempted murder, CBS affiliate WISH-TV in Indianapolis reports.

Investigators said McCauley and the 20-year-old male victim knew each other and had spent time together Saturday before the shooting, which happened around 6:30 p.m. Saturday in a stairwell at the Lincoln Quad residence hall.

Campus police said the victim had surgery Sunday to remove a bullet from his buttocks. He is expected to make a full recover, police told WISH-TV.

McCauley is scheduled to appear in court Monday.

UPDATE @ 11:50 p.m.:

The 20-year-old Indiana State University student now says he was shot around 6:30 p.m. in a stairwell at Lincoln Quad. Earlier, the victim said he was shot while walking on campus near the dormitory, according to the university.

Police are searching for a male in his mid-20s who was last seen wearing a white polo shirt, CBS affiliate WISH-TV reported. Originally, police were searching for two suspects, but now they say there is only one suspected gunman.

The victim was listed in good condition at Union Hospital, WISH-TV reported.

UPDATE @ 10:45 p.m.

A 20-year-old Indiana State University student shot on campus Saturday afternoon has not been fully cooperative with investigators, according to a campus crime alert posted at 10:27 p.m. on the university's website.

ISU police reported they are certain the victim was the intended target, and that he and the suspect are acquaintences who were together for more than an hour earlier in the day.

The university is returning to normal conditions, though campus police urged students to report any suspicious activity.

An Indiana State University spokesman said a 20-year-old student who was shot Saturday afternoon did not suffer life-threatening injuries, reported CBS affiliate WISH-TV Channel 8 in Indianapolis.

The shooting on campus is believed to be an isolated incident, according to a campus crime alert on the Indiana State University website.

"There is a heavy police presence on campus though it is believed that the shooter has left the area," according to the university.

Indiana State University released suspect information in the campus shooting.

The suspects were both described as black males. The victim, also a male, said he was unable to provide further information.

A student reported this evening he was shot while walking on campus of Indiana State University.

The shooting happened around 6 p.m. near the Lincoln Quad residence hall, according to a campus crime alert posted on the university's website.

The student, a male, reported he was struck by gunfire while walking on campus. He was conscious and alert.

The university is urging that students stay out of the area while police investigate.
