Parent pleads no contest in altercation with coach

A Bethel schools parent charged in an altercation with the varsity football coach after the parent questioned his son's playing time pleaded to an amended charge Wednesday.

Michael Mullins, 44, of U.S. Route 40, Tipp City, pleaded no contest to an amended misdemeanor assault charge in Miami County Municipal Court. A second charge was dismissed.

Mullins was found guilty and sentenced to a $100 fine, court costs and a 90-day jail term suspended on the condition he complies with conditions of a court-approved civil protection order.

He was accused of assaulting coach Kevin Finfrock in the Bethel School bus garage, used by the team as a locker room, after the Nov. 1 game.

Deputies said Mullins allegedly approached Finfrock and asked to talk with him about his son's playing time. Finfrock reported he declined but was followed into the garage by Mullins, where two altercations allegedly occurred.

The sheriff's office report stated Finfrock was folding chairs while cleaning the garage when the two exchanged words.

Mullins allegedly yelled that he thought Finfrock was going to hit him with a chair and charged the coach. Two witnesses said they pulled Mullins off Finfrock before a second encounter occurred.
