Miamisburg woman accused of Girl Scouts troop theft

A Miamisburg woman is in jail, accused of stealing from a Girl Scout troop.

Melissa Hanks, 39, is being held on $100,000 bond in the Montgomery County Jail on two felony theft charges.

She pleaded not guilty during her arraignment on Thursday and is next scheduled to appear Tuesday in Miamisburg Municipal Court, online court records show.

The Girl Scouts of Western Ohio filed a police report in July regarding missing funds from Troop 32299 involving Hanks, said Katelyn Scott, communications and marketing manager for the council.

According to the July 6 report from the Miamisburg Police Department, a Girl Scouts representative gave police “documentation implicating Melissa Hanks in a theft of proceeds from selling Girl Scout cookies.”

Hanks’ daughter was a Daisy scout who sold cookies, but the money wasn’t turned in, Scott said.

“All girls, including those whose families have been involved in financial or legal issues, are always welcome to participate in Girl Scouts,” Scott said.

Hanks has been jailed since her Tuesday arrest, online jail records show.
