Inmate who escaped STOP facility in county van indicted

DAYTON — A 27-year-old man accused of escaping the Montgomery County STOP facility by stealing a county van was indicted.

Darryl E. Adams is charged with escape and two counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report released Friday.

Adams was an inmate of the the court-ordered drug intervention program, detained for trafficking in heroin, when he escaped on Jan. 23, according to court records.

He is accused of driving off in a 2013 Chevrolet Express van owned by the county STOP program.

Adams was captured the night of Jan. 24 on Indiana Avenue in Dayton.

Terri Hawk, manager of STOP, said Adams had been helping with meal transport. While the guard was signing for the meals, Adams allegedly jumped in the van and drove away.

Adams is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
