Grand jury declines to indict in 1987 Kettering murder case

A Montgomery County Grand Jury has declined to issue an indictment in the 1987 murder of Kettering resident Karen Goff, the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s officer announced in a press release Friday.

Goff’s father Don Goff found the then 20-year-old’s body on the afternoon of Nov. 18, 1987 when he went to her house at 2341 Carew Ave. The older Goff went to his daugter’s home because Karen was not answering the telephone.

She had been beaten, raped and strangled, left nude in her bedroom and she had marks on her wrists where she was restrained.

The killer reportedly came through a window in the rear of the house while Goff may have been taking a shower and surprised her. She was last heard from at 1 a.m. when she made a phone call to a friend.

Police detectives conducted an investigation into the murder, but the case was not solved.

However, the Miami Valley Cold Case Squad reopened the case in 2013 and Kettering police submitted evidence for DNA analysis since that technology was not available at the time of the murder.

New evidence came to light, which led to a suspect and the new evidence was presented to a Montgomery County Grand Jury. But the Grand Jury determined that there’s not enough evidence to proceed further in charging anyone criminally with off’s murder.
