Family fought police for him, now he’s off to prison

A Dayton man, whose family members fought Dayton police when they tried to arrest him on a traffic stop, is off to prison.

Sherrod J. Dyer was sentenced July 1 in U.S. District Court to 58 months for firearm possession as a convicted felon, the office of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio announced recently.

According to court documents, police approached Dyer as he exited a vehicle in the driveway of a Dayton home in the 500 block of Cedarhurst Avenue in January.

Dyer attempted to flee into the home but, as police apprehended him, a loaded Sig Sauer 9mm firearm fell from his possession. Police also found empty gel capsules and approximately 1.9 grams of a heroin/fentanyl mixture intended for distribution inside the vehicle in which Dyer had arrived.

At the time, Dyer had been convicted in 2011 of felony drug trafficking (heroin) in Montgomery County. He was prohibited from having any firearm because his prior offenses were punishable by more than one year in prison, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.

Dyer pleaded guilty March 15 to a Bill of Information on the single count of firearm possession by a convicted felon.
