Dayton bootleg joint busted; 2 arrested

Dayton police made two arrests while shutting down an illegal "bootleg" liquor and gambling house Monday morning.

According to reports, police have been investigating illegal activity at 227 Orleans St. for more than a month. Officers observed people coming and going from the house between 2:30 and 5 a.m., usually on Monday mornings after bars were closed, according to the reports.

On Oct. 5 two people were shot at the house during a birthday celebration. The male and female were driven to Miami Valley Hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. They told detectives that they were shot in an upstairs gambling room when an argument escalated and someone opened fire.

On Oct. 6, police reportedly met with the man believed to be running the operation, DeAngelo Camp. He reportedly admitted to selling alcohol and running gambling at the house and told police he would shut it down.

On Monday morning police observed Camp working the door at the house, patting down people as they entered, according to a report. Officers went inside and found evidence that the bootleg operation was still up and running, including a bar with beer and liquor, food and fryers in a kitchen and card tables set up with cards and money on them.

Camp, 53, was issued a summons to appear on a misdemeanor charge for running the establishment without proper permits.

Demetrius Hodges, 52, was arrested pending charges of carrying a concealed weapon, having a weapon under disability and receiving stolen property after he was found to have a stolen gun tucked into his waistband.

A second loaded gun was found in the kitchen area of the home. Another man inside was found with a small amount of marijuana in his pocket and was cited, according to the reports.
