2 arrested, syringes found in cavity searches

Two women were arrested after Mercer County deputies found syringes during body cavity searches, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.

Paige Waterman, 29, and Chelsie Hedge, 21, both of Celina, were arrested Monday during a traffic stop on suspicion of possessing drug paraphernalia, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies reported receivng a tip that the two suspects were on their way to Dayton to buy drugs. The tip included information that the women would “hide the drugs inside their body cavities if they suspected they would get pulled over.”

The women were stopped on Coldwater Creek Road and a Celina police K-9 alerted deputies to the presence of drugs, which led to deputies obtaining a body-cavity search warrant, according to the release.

During the search, deputies removed from each woman “a syringe from their vaginal cavity area,” according to the release.

Both women face misdemeanor charges of possession of drug abuse instruments.

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said in a prepared statement that body cavity search warrants are rare, but “these type of warrants will become more common, and necessary.”

“This is yet another obstacle law enforcement has to deal with not only on the street, but also inside the Adult Detention Facility with drugs, and drug paraphernalia being concealed and transported inside body cavities,” Grey’s statement reads.
