Alleged thief uses box-cutter at Springfield store

A 31-year-old man was arrested Friday after he allegedly displayed a box-cutter knife and trying to steal at the Rite Aid Pharmacy, 401 W. North St.

Springfield officers caught up with Jerry Gelpi shortly after 5 p.m. after he ran from the store, according to Lt. Jeff Meyer.

Gelpi will be held on a robbery charge because he displayed a weapon during a theft offense, Meyer said.

Police said an employee observed the suspect using a box-cutter knife to open boxes in the store, apparently in an effort to steal items.

The suspect was confronted and allegedly pointed the knife at the employee before running out of the store.
