A 17-year-old Amish boy was killed Thursday night in a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy and three cars.
The crash was reported around 9:30 p.m. on U.S. 35 near Newman Road, just north of Economy.
Jonas Beiler, 17, of Economy, was a passenger in the buggy. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Indiana State Police.
Michael Lapp, 17, of Economy, had the reins of a buggy headed north on U.S. 35 with no lights on when the driver of a 2009 Ford car, 44-year-old Martin Lawson of Hagerstown, was unable avoid striking the rear of the buggy, according to preliminary investigation by the state police. The impact forced the buggy into the south lane of U.S. 35. The buggy was then sideswiped by a Buick headed south, driven by 51-year-old Norman Zile of Middletown, troopers said.
Beiler was ejected onto the roadway during the collision, and was struck by a Pontiac headed north, driven by 17-year-old Bailey Wilkison of Mooreland. Lapp and a female passenger were not hurt, and neither were the drivers of the cars. The horse also was not injured, according to state police.
