MIDDLETOWN — A man who tossed a barrel over a fence at his home as police watched is in custody on charges stemming from the dead female the officers discovered in that barrel.

William Slaton, 35, is in jail on charges of gross abuse of a corpse, failure to report a crime or death and tampering with evidence, according to a statement issued by Middletown police late Tuesday night.

The police division, on a warrant, searched Slaton's home and collected evidence. Police offered no details about that evidence.

Officers were dispatched to Slaton’s residence, in the 3200 block of Yankee Road, just before 1 p.m. on a report there was a female in a barrel at that address. Officers told him about the complaint. He went back in the house, continued to the back yard and tossed a barrel over the fence.

The officers checked the barrel and found the body inside.

Once the autopsy is complete and the case reviewed with the county prosecutor's office, additional charges may be filed.
