DAYTON — Members of the Dayton Children’s Hospital pharmacy department are creating their own hand sanitizer in response to the nationwide shortage created by the coronavirus pandemic.

The team already has made more than 65 gallons of hand sanitizer, which is being used to meet current hospital demand.
During the early stages of the pandemic, the Federal Drug Administration and the Board of Pharmacy relaxed regulations to allow pharmacies to manufacture hand sanitizer. Based on this decision and guidance from Dayton Children’s supply chain and infection prevention, the pharmacy team decided to take action.
The hand sanitizer is created using just four ingredients in a negative pressure room of the hospital. The hand sanitizer produced by the department is being distributed throughout the hospital.
The team is exploring the idea of a second batch of sanitizer, which would be bottled and sold to Dayton Children’s employees who are having a hard time finding hand sanitizer in stores.
