Federal court sentences 'Barefoot Bandit' to 6 1/2 years in prison

Colton Harris-Moore -- the notorious "Barefoot Bandit" -- spoke in court for the first time Friday before being sentenced to 6 1/2 years in prison with three years supervised release for his role in a two-year international crime spree.

"I'm so deeply bothered by my actions," Harris-Moore told the court.

Harris-Moore was sentenced last month to seven years for his state crimes. That sentence will be served concurrently with his federal sentence. Harris-Moore's attorneys had requested a federal term of less than six years to reflect the time he'd already served.

He will also be required to pay restitution to his victims, the amount of which will be determined at a hearing on February 24.

Harris-Moore expressed remorse for causing fear to the victims of the home break-ins he admitted to, acknowledging those people had no way of knowing who was breaking into their homes or how dangerous the person may have been. He said he wants to make things right.

"I want to make a difference in this world, legally," he said.

Harris-Moore pleaded guilty to federal charges in a series of break-ins and boat and plane thefts.

The 20-year-old also pleaded guilty last month and was sentenced for his state crimes.

Harris-Moore was arrested in the Bahamas in 2010 when authorities shot out the motor of a boat he stole. He arrived in the Bahamas after making a daring cross-country dash in stolen boats and cars, stealing a plane in Indiana and crash-landing it off the Caribbean islands.
