A portion of U.S. 40 was dedicated Saturday in honor of a 2005 Tecumseh High School graduate killed in Afghanistan.
A sign now marks U.S. 40 — from the intersection with North Medway-Carlisle Road to the Lammes Lane intersection in Clark County — as the Staff Sgt. Wesley Williams Memorial Highway.
Williams, 25, died Dec. 10, 2012, of wounds suffered in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his Army unit with an improvised explosive device, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.
A veteran of two tours in Iraq, Williams was deployed a month before his death to Afghanistan as a squad leader, according to the defense department. He served with 1st Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment, 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
Williams was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. His wife, Krista, was six months pregnant with their second daughter at the time of his death.
