2 taken into custody after shooting, pursuit

UPDATE @11:40 a.m.

Police have identified two people taken into custody in connection with a shooting and police pursuit early Thursday morning.

Javon Dawson, 20, and George L. Dewberry, 23, both of Trotwood, are each in custody on a charge of felonious assault.

Police said the incident started early Thursday morning when there was a domestic dispute between one of the suspects and a woman in the 4900 block of Biddison Avenue. Police said the two men returned to the apartment around 1:30 a.m., and there was another dispute with a man who lives at the apartment. Police said the dispute was in the parking lot.

Ten to 15 shots were fired, and the man was shot once in the leg. He has since been treated and released from Miami Valley Hospital.

It’s unknown which of the two suspects fired the shots.

Police said they do not believe the shooting is related to a fatal shooting last week when a 20-year-old woman was killed at the same apartment complex.

FIRST REPORT

Two people were taken into custody following a shooting and pursuit in Trotwood overnight.

Around 1:45 a.m., police responding to the 4900 block of Biddison Avenue in Trotwood on the reports of shots fired found one victim with a gunshot wound to the leg, according to initial reports. Police relayed to other agencies a suspect vehicle involved in the shooting.

A few minutes later, authorities spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the suspect vehicle on U.S. 35 near James H. McGee. The vehicle did not stop and a pursuit began.

During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle and a Montgomery County cruiser collided at least once, according to reports.

By 2 a.m., the suspect vehicle pulled over on eastbound U.S. 35 near Gettysburg Avenue. One person ran from the car, but was later apprehended. A second person stayed in the car and was also taken into custody.

The shooting happened at the same apartment complex where a Huber Heights woman was shot and killed last week. Destiny Mills, 20, was lying on a couch in the apartment when 10 to 15 bullets were fired through the door on March 24. Mills was struck in the left shoulder during the gunfire and died on the way to the hospital. Police have said Mills was likely not the intended target.

Police have not said whether the two incidents are related.
