No suspects in fatal shooting of Springfield man found in crashed SUV

A person was fatally shot in Springfield on Thursday night and a fight broke out when dozens of people gathered at the scene.

UPDATE @ 10:32 a.m.:

Springfield police have identified the victim in the city’s latest homicide as Robert Robinson, 25, of Springfield.

According to a police report, Robinson was found lying across the driver and passenger seat in a vehicle that had crashed into a tree.

The report indicated Robinson had been shot in the head

UPDATE @ 11 p.m.:

Springfield police said a man walked to an SUV at the intersection of Clifton Avenue and East John Street and began shooting.

The body is still in the vehicle.

Dozens of people are at the scene and a fight broke out at one point. Police quickly ended it. Whether anyone was arrested is not evident.

Homicide detectives are continuing to do their investigation in an area separated from the public by crime scene tape.

INITIAL REPORT

Springfield police are on the scene of a reported shooting in the area of Clifton Avenue and East John Street.

We're hearing that police may be looking for a light blue car that was last seen on John Street, headed toward Clark State.

We're also hearing that shell casings have been found in the roadway on North Clifton Avenue and that crime scene tape is blocking traffic at Lincoln Park Circle and near Hayward Middle School.

The incident was dispatched sometime after 8 p.m. as a crash involving an SUV that hit a tree.
