Middletown woman killed in second deadly alcohol-related weekend crash

A Middletown woman is dead in what is the second deadly crash in the city over the weekend reportedly involving alcohol, according to an Ohio State Highway Patrol release.

Middletown crews and troopers responded to the fatal crash around 12:45 a.m. Sunday morning at the intersection of North University Boulevard and Manchester Avenue.

Rita Mathews, 52, was killed when the car she was driving struck a curb and overturned. Mathews was thrown out of the car during the crash and was then trapped underneath the vehicle.

According to the release, Mathews was pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner's office and was reportedly not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Alcohol is expected to be a factor in the crash, according to troopers.

On Saturday, another Middletown woman was killed after the car she was driving struck a tree.

Troopers said alcohol also was a contributing factor in that crash.
