Greene County fatal plane crash report released

We are learning new information after the National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday released the preliminary crash report for the fatal plane crash near Xenia that killed pilot Joel Lansford on Jan. 26.

According to that report, Lansford’s flight originated from Indianapolis Executive Airport in Indiana and crashed about 6 p.m. during final approach to runway 25 at the Greene County - Lewis A. Jackson Regional Airport. He was returning the plane after a recently completed maintenance at a repair station in Indiana, according to the report.

The report also indicated that there were no distress calls from the pilot during the flight and that Lansford had normal communication with air traffic control and ground personnel.

Lansford’s plane ended up crashing in a wooded ravine about 300 feet short of the runway at the airport just outside of Xenia.

He was a helicopter pilot in the Ohio Army National Guard and an Afghan war veteran. Lansford left behind a wife and twin sons.
