Firefighter, deputy buys car seat for baby rescued in double-fatal crash

SPRING VALLEY TWP., Greene County — A Xenia Twp. firefighter, who also works as a Greene County deputy, donated a new car seat to the family of Harlyn Coates, the 1-year-old girl rescued from a crash that killed two others.

Daniel Schrand was one of the firefighters who responded to the crash Saturday on Ohio 380 near Camp Jabez in the 3100 block of the state route. Schrand said he purchased the car seat with his own money and delivered it to the family’s home for Coates.

Baylee Yost posted Schrand’s picture on Facebook, thanking him for the donation.

“So thankful and blessed,” Yost wrote in her post.

Coates was the lone survivor in the crash, which killed her grandfather Carl Perry, 49, and her great grandmother, Linda Davis, 73. Coates was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening and she was no longer listed as a patient Tuesday morning, officials said.
