Dog dies in early morning house fire in Riverside

RIVERSIDE — A dog was killed and a house sustained significant damage after a fire broke out early Thursday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the 500 block of Lorella Avenue in Riverside around 3:30 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure.

Firefighters used a chainsaw to cut a hole in the roof to douse the home with water, Battalion Chief Robert Turner told News Center 7.

The man who lives at the house was not at home and was working when the fire broke out.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Firefighters are familiar with Loretta Avenue — last August, the house right next door caught fire, displacing a family of five. That fire was labeled as suspicious. In 2014, the house across the street caught fire, likely from an electrical issue.

We will update this story once we learn more.
