UPDATE @ 10:30 p.m. (March 10)

A man was killed in a fire tonight at his home in the 1600 block of Horlacher Avenue in Kettering.

The man, who was not identified, was found on the first floor. His wife and children were away, said Jon Durrenberg, battalion chief of the Kettering Fire Department.

The fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. When crews arrived, “they had fire venting out of the first floor,” Durrenberg said.

The fire was contained to the first floor, and when crews entered the home they found the man, deceased, inside, he said. He was the only person home and no pets were found inside either, the battalion chief said.

“The crews didn’t find any evidence of working smoke detectors, but that will be looked into more as they investigate,” Durrenberg said.

The state fire marshal’s office also will assist Kettering crews in their investigation.

“We have no idea what started the fire,” Durrenberg said, but he noted it is not believed to be suspicious.

No firefighters were harmed, and a family dog was believed to have been outside at the time of the fire.
