Video depicts conflict at gas station during shooting

This news outlet has obtained cell phone video from the family of the person who died in this incident.

Dayton police have confirmed the validity of the video, which shows the latter stages of the conflict. The case is under investigation.

Police did not arrest the gunman in a fatal shooting that happened late Saturday night at the Shell gas station, 4046 Free Pike.

Police said the shooter turned himself in within minutes of the incident and is cooperating with the investigators.

Police said the initial investigation indicates this was a “robbery gone wrong,” in which the shooter was the alleged robbery victim.

Willie Coleman III, 24, has been identified as the man shot and killed in the incident. He died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to preliminary findings by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has released the identification of the man shot and killed in a robbery incident at the Shell gas station, 4046 Free Pike.

The body has been identified as Willie Coleman III, 24, of Dayton, according to the coroner’s office.

Next of kin have been notified of the death. An autopsy has not been completed yet and no preliminary findings can be released, according to the coroner’s office.

Dayton police said the man shot and killed at the Shell gas station on Free Pike was involved in a “robbery gone wrong.”

Police were dispatched to the Shell gas station at 4046 Free Pike around 11:40 p.m. Saturday on a report of a shooting, according to Dayton police Sgt. Randy Beane.

Beane said the man was shot after attempting to rob another. The shooting victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooter is cooperating with police and turned himself in at the Trotwood Police Department, according to Beane. It is unclear if the man will face any charges.

Detectives are currently looking at surveillance video from the business to see if the situation was caught on tape.

UPDATE @12:57 a.m.

Dayton police say one person has been shot and killed outside of the Shell gas station on Free Pike.

An investigator with the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office has been requested to the scene of the shooting.

UPDATE @ 12:10 a.m.

Several police cruisers are on scene and yellow police tape is up.

A white sheet is spread on the ground, which is covering what appears to be a body. However, police on scene have not commented about their investigation.

FIRST REPORT

The 4000 block of Free Pike is shut down tonight as police investigate a shooting.

Police and medics were called around 11:40 p.m. to the gas station at 4046 Free Pike.

According to initial reports, the suspect fled in a black car but the gunshot victim was still on scene. We are on the way.
