Fire crews remove man from Great Miami River

UPDATE @ 9:33 p.m.: Fire crews have removed the man from the Great Miami River and he will be taken into custody, to a hospital for evaluation.

UPDATE @ 9:10 p.m.: The man has moved beneath the Main Street bridge and is showing no signs of coming out the Great Miami River.

A Dayton fire official tells us crews are going to put a boat in the water to bring the man to shore.

UPDATE @ 8:45 p.m.: Several people gathered on the Main Street bridge are reporting that they can see the man is naked. He continues to stand in water that is up to his shoulders.

Moments after this report, Dayton police cleared the bridge of spectators so as not to excite the man, who is yelling up to police on the bridge.

No fewer than nine police cruisers, a medic unit and a fire department boat team are on scene.

UPDATE @ 8:35 p.m.: A crowd of 50 to 100 people have gathered on bridges overlooking the Great Miami River where a man appears to be standing in the water about 30 to 40 feet from the riverside.

Dayton fire crews have a boat and are deciding whether to put it in the water to get the man or just wade in and get him.

He is speaking with police and fire officials, but he’s not moving.

FIRST REPORT

Fire and rescue crews were sent to pluck a person out of the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton this evening on what is being described as “a police related matter.”

Dayton crews and fire boat 14 were sent to the river in the area of Main Street and Monument Avenue about 8:15 p.m. for someone in the water “who is not in distress.”

We have a crew on the way to check it out what appears to be a man standing in the water.
