Storm system could affect Thanksgiving travel

Heading into what is the busiest travel day of the year, a storm system will begin to develop and move into the Miami Valley.

But it’s not just Southwest Ohio that will be impacted by the storm, but rather much of the Midwest — and that could lead to travel problems across the country.

An area of low pressure will approach from the west and spread showers across most of the upper Midwest Tuesday evening through Thursday.

For us in the Miami Valley, this means rain is expected Wednesday afternoon as a cold front pushes through, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini said.

Those traveling by road on Wednesday locally will need to give themselves extra time as soggy road conditions are likely.

As for air travelers on Wednesday, you’ll want to check your airline ahead of time to see if there are any delays.

Rain and gusty winds Tuesday night in Chicago could delay some air travelers. While we don’t anticipate major travel issues, there could be some delays or cancellations as a result of this storm system.

If you have any travel plans by road, be sure to stay up to date with the latest traffic conditions on our WHIO traffic page.

Another weak front will move through on Black Friday, bringing some showers back to the Miami Valley, but Thanksgiving day itself is looking mostly dry.
