Statewide tornado drills in Indiana today

This week is not only Severe Weather Awareness week in Ohio, but also in Indiana.

There will be two statewide drills today in Indiana, one in the morning at 10:15 and a second in the evening at 7:35 p.m., according to StormCenter 7 Meteorologist Kirstie Zontini.

This week is a great time to not only review your severe weather plan with your family, but also to test your knowledge of weather related alerts. When it comes to severe weather, the Storm Prediction Center is responsible for issuing tornado and severe thunderstorm watches, while individual National Weather Service offices issue warnings, such as for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.

Each alert is important and should be taken seriously, Zontini said. When a watch is issued, this means that conditions are favorable for severe weather to develop.

When a warning is issued, severe weather is either occurring or is imminent.

Trained spotter reports or radar indication will lead to the issuance of a warning. This is when you need to take action immediately and get into a safe place. Stay there until a warning has expired.

On Monday, April 4, WHIO-TV and the StormCenter 7 team will air a severe weather special on Channel 7 at 7:30 p.m. titled “Surviving The Storm.” Our team of meteorologists will show viewers how we track storms and help you prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws our way in the coming months.
