A magnitude 6.1 earthquake (USGS reports 6.2) that struck central Italy early Wednesday, levelling buildings in several towns as residents slept, was detected by the Ohio Seismic network including the sensor at Wright State University’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
The quake struck just after 3:36 a.m. CEST or 9:36 ET. Seismic waves from the quake traveled around the earth and were detected 11 minutes later, at 9:47 in Dayton. This seismograph from WSU shows the initial waves being detected with additional waves that traveled through the earth that were reflected or refracted being detected at around 10:11pm EDT.
While the quake was not felt here in Ohio, it was felt across a broad section of central Italy, including the capital Rome where people in homes in the historic center felt a long swaying followed by aftershocks.
