Slippery roads remain as snow stops

Roads will remain slick with temperatures lower than expected, Storm Center 7 Meteorologist Rich Wirdzek said.

Refreeze on roadways is the main concern now that the snow storm has passed east of the area and temperatures dipped into the 20s.

Late tonight, freezing fog has developed in the wake of some clearing skies and a diminished breeze.

“This will aid in making travel icy, especially on bridges and overpasses that may have been cleared from snow earlier,” said Wirdzek, who added that more clouds and a sligh breeze are moving back in from the west, so the fog issues should let up over the next several hours.

Due to this chance for fog, the National Weather Service has issued a dense fog advisory for Champaign, Clark, Clinton, Greene, and Warren counties until 10 a.m. Visibilities will be reduced to below 1/4 mile during the advisory, as well as some slick spots that could form where the fog freezes.

Sunday: A cold front will move through the area during the day, which will keep temperatures from rising much.

“A few snow showers will be possible, but little to no accumulation is expected,” said Wirdzek, who said there will be clouds and a little sun at times along with a breeze with highs in the mid-20s.

Monday: The snowpack will help to make for a much colder morning, under clearer skies. Lows will start out close to zero, if not a few degrees below zero. Despite some sun during the day, highs will only reach about 10 degrees.

Tuesday: Another very cold start is expected due to the snowpack. Morning lows will be several degrees below zero. However, a southerly flow will kick in during the day to allow for a nice rebound in temperatures, with highs in the mid-20s. A fast-moving cold front will get again approach the area late in the day. Light snow will be possible late evening and into the early morning hours of Wednesday. As of now, a small accumulation is possible, Wirdzek said.

Wednesday: It will be breezy and cold in the wake of the cold front. A snow shower is possible, but this chance is low and no accumulation is expected. Highs will be around 20 degrees.

Thursday: A clear sky and snowpack will allow for another frigid start, somewhere close to zero in the morning. High pressure will lead to a mostly sunny sky, but highs will only reach the mid-teens in the afternoon.
