CSX Train rolling after blocking crossings in Tipp City

TIPP CITY — UPDATE @ 9:10 p.m.

A CSX crew had to stop a train to address a mechanical problem this afternoon on its way from Lima to Cincinnati.

The train had 138 cars and two locomotives, but there was no damage to any cargo or any injuries, said Rob Doolittle, director of communications for CSX.

The mixed-freight train was hauling a variety of freight, including aluminum, cooking oil, automobiles and paper products, Doolittle said. Once crew members made repairs, the train was able to continue to its destination. Although Doolittle said mechanical problems when they happen cause inconveniences, he pointed out that the railroad is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to haul freight long distances.

UPDATE @ 5:17 p.m.

A CSX freight train started rolling about three hours after it stopped and blocked several streets in Tipp City.

The train conductor told our photographer on scene that the train, heading from Lima to Cincinnati, went into emergency mode and abruptly stopped after the air pressure system malfunctioned.

Fifteen cars on the mile-plus long train disconnected, but the train did not derail, according to the conductor.

The conductor added that it was an unusual incident, and there was some concern because the train is hauling some hazardous materials.

At 5:20 p.m., our crew on scene reported that the train started moving and the railroad crossings were slowly coming clear to road traffic. Authorities were notified of the incident at 2:17 p.m., according to the Miami County emergency dispatch center.
