Pastor: Community ‘in shock’ after news about Good Samaritan closing

Published: Wednesday, January 17, 2018 @ 7:17 PM

Hours after Good Samaritan Hospital officials announced Wednesday that the facility will close later this year, reaction about the community impact has been wide ranging.

"It's devastating news, I was shocked" said Daryl Ward, pastor of Omega Baptist Church in Dayton.

His church is just down the street from Good Samaritan Hospital, and he’s had conversations with his parishioners who are still processing the news.

"Everybody's just in shock, and people said 'I was born there. I had babies there. I had my babies there,’”he said.

The announcement that another employer’s leaving the area is something that’s always worrisome, Ward said.

"But it's not a new concern. This has been a part of the ongoing devastation that's been going on in this community," he said.

The latest concern is not just for local businesses, but where some of his parishioners will go and who need care, he said.

"I'm angry at the leaders of our community in terms of why can't we think about the best for the community," Ward said.

The pastor said he will be praying that the businesses that are located near the hospital will continue to survive despite the news of Good Samaritan.

An Indianapolis mother is accused of feeding her child a dangerous homemade concoction in an attempt to "cure" the child's autism, police said.

The woman's husband claims his wife placed drops of hydrochloric acid and a water purifying solution that contained chlorine into their child's beverage, FOX59 reported. The woman reportedly referred to the mixture as the "miracle mineral solution" and said she found the recipe on a Facebook group page. The husband told police that his wife had fed their child the toxic mixture a few weeks ago, but he only found out about it last weekend.

The Indianapolis Police Department told FOX59 that the Department of Child Services is reviewing the case and has removed the child from the home. Police declined to release the names of the parents or any of the child's identifying information. The investigation remains active.
