Local WWII vets Russell Crockett, 92, holds his collection of medals awarded his service in General Patton's Army during World War II. Among his medals is the Legion of Honor medal he was awarded in August this year by the French government for his service as a tank platoon leader during the liberation of France. Local WWII vets Rolla E. "Ed" Malan, 96, was in the Navy at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, when the Japanese attacked. Malan was assigned to the U.S.S. Preble, a mine-laying ship, but was staying in the submarine barracks when he saw many Japanese fighter and bomber planes fly by and later witnessed the U.S.S. Arizona explode. TY GREENLEES / STAFF
Local WWII vets Charlie Burke, a World War II veteran and resident of Patriot Ridge Nursing Home in Fairborn, was presented with a medallion minted in honor of veterans of World War II. The Greene County Veterans Services Office and State Rep. Rick Perales, R-Beavercreek presented five World War II veterans with the medallions at a presentation at the nursing home Wednesday. The medallions were minted in honor and remembrance of veterans of WWII by the Non Commissioned Officers Association. The second annual veterans summit meeting in Greene County will be held tonight from 6-8 p.m. at 571 Ledbetter Rd. in Xenia. Representatives from veterans organizations, including the Dayton VA, will be on hand to answer veterans questions and make them aware of benefits they may not know about. LISA POWELL / STAFF (, )
