Traffic signals, power out in Dayton area

Dayton police were directing traffic at a couple major intersections this evening after power outages in the area caused traffic signals to go out.

Police around 5:45 p.m. put up portable stop signs at Steve Whalen Boulevard at westbound U.S. 35 after there were around 1,400 customers without power.

Other traffic signals were out at North Keowee at East First streets and North Main Street at White Allen Avenue, according to dispatch reports.

The outages were caused by fire on a utility pole that was reported around 4:40 p.m. that led wires to come down in the area of Beckley Avenue at East Second Street, said Kelly Millhouse, director of operations for Dayton Power and Light co.

The majority of customers will have power restored by 7 p.m., but about 20 customers will be without power until around midnight while the pole is replaced, Millhouse said.
