Cigarette causes Huber Heights fire

UPDATE @ 10 a.m.: According to the Huber Heights Fire Department, the fire began from a discarded cigarette. The homeowner tried to put the flames out by himself, then called 911 for help. The Red Cross is helping the family. Three people were in the home at the time of the fire.

The homeowner decided to change smoke detector batteries last weekend when daylight savings time was observed, and he credits that for hearing the alarm and getting out.

FIRST REPORT @ 5:30 a.m.: Fire did heavy damage to a home in Huber Heights this morning.

Crews on the scene say discarded smoking materials sparked the blaze.

Firefighters went out to the 7700 block of Timbercrest Drive around 4:45 a.m.

Smoke detectors went off in the home and woke two people up.

Three people were inside at the time and all made it out unharmed.

The homeowner told firefighters he had just changed the batteries in the alarms for Daylight Savings.
