Lauren Hill named to HCAC 1st Team

Lauren Hill, the Mount Saint Joseph’s freshman basketball player battling inoperable brain cancer, has been named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference 1st Team.

The 19-year-old, who’s receiving Hospice care, is wrapping up a memorable year of accomplishment and accolades. After signing with the Div. III college, she was diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer.  Her dream of wanting to live long enough to play college basketball came true last fall, when the league moved the opening day of the season up so she could play in her first game. Unable to use her dominant hand, she made her first layup with her left hand, to a rousing standing ovation.

Hill, from Greendale, Ind., has received a series of honors, including being named HCAC Women’s Player of the Week , receiving the HCAC Inspiration Award, appearing on her own Wheaties Box cover, and being named “America’s Sweetheart” on Feb. 14 by Harrison High School, which hosted a fundraiser for “The Cure Starts Now Foundation.”

Hill set a goal of raising $1 million to find a cure.
