Darke County boy on bike hit by car has died

UPDATE @ 4:10 p.m. (June 12): The Darke County boy has died, the Montgomery County Coroner's Office tells the county sheriff's office.

Leyden Guenther, 9, died of his injuries about 12:40 p.m., according to the coroner’s office. He was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital by CareFlight.

In the first report about the incident, the sheriff’s office incorrectly communicated that the boy was 10.

FIRST REPORT (June 10)

A 10-year-old Darke County boy on a bike hit by a car this afternoon has been taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The Darke County Sheriff’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the the accident, which occurred in the 300 block of Union City-Elroy Road just after 4:30 p.m.

A preliminary investigation reveals that the Union City, Ohio, boy was on his bike headed south out of a driveway and entered the westbound lane of the road when he was hit by a green 2006 Mercury Montego.

The child was not wearing protective head gear. He was taken to the hospital by CareFlight. His condition was not immediately known, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver of the car, 49-year-old Darrin L. Smith, also of Union City, Ohio, was not injured.
