Vandalia house fire causes extensive smoke damage

UPDATE @ 9:33 p.m.:

A Vandalia house sustained extensive smoke damage Saturday evening after a fire broke out in the ranch home.

Crews were called around 7 p.m. to the 11400 block of Cassel Road to a report of a house fire with heavy smoke showing.

Vandalia firefighters said while the cause of the blaze is uncertain, they do know it is not weather-related.

A man who said he was the homeowner’s father but declined to give his name said the fire may be electrical, but it’s unclear what sparked it. He said it appeared to start in a bedroom, but only an aquarium pump was plugged into an outlet in the room. He said there were no injuries.
