30 baby chicks perish in Clark County fire

More than two dozen baby chicks perished in a fire the day before Easter in Clark County.

Neighbors and passersby helped put out the fire that broke out around 3 p.m. in a shed at a farm off state Route 235 in Pike Twp., north of New Carlisle.

The fire was sparked when a heat lamp used to keep the baby chicks warm tipped over in the chicken broader. Thirty baby chicks perished, but the passersby, using water hoses, were able to keep the fire from spreading while Pike Twp. firefighters responded, according to property owner Kevin White, a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel.

The owners were away when the fire broke out.

White said he is grateful for the neighbors and strangers who helped.

“This is a testament to the quality of people who live in our state, county and neighborhood. People stopped, interrupted their lives and made a very significant difference in our lives by containing this fire to a relatively small structure,” White stated.
