Woman, 70, seriously hurt in 3-vehicle crash

UPDATE @ 7:40 p.m.:

A 70-year-old Darke County woman was seriously injured this afternoon after her SUV overturned after it was rear-ended by a semi and struck another truck.

The three-vehicle crash that happened at 3 p.m. shut down U.S. 36 in the 8100 block for nearly three hours.

According to preliminary investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, Teresa Ann Johnson of Greenville was east on U.S. 36 around 3 p.m. when she slowed to turn left into a driveway. She was struck by a semitruck, driven by Aurthur D. Elliott, 61, of Springfield, also east on U.S. 36. The impact forced the SUV into the west lanes, where Johnson struck a cargo truck driven by Robert L. Himes Jr., 51, of Union City, Indiana.

Johnson and her passenger, 53-year-old Jody L. Stewart of Bay City, Michigan, were trapped and had to be extricated from the SUV. They were both flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, where Johnson was listed in serious condition and Stewart in fair condition, according to the sheriff’s office.

Elliott and Himes were not hurt.

The Ohio State Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement Officer responded to the scene for a vehicle inspection.

The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office.

UPDATE @ 6:50 p.m.: A three-vehicle crash seriously injured two people this afternoon and shut down U.S. 36 for several hours.

According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, a semituck traveling east rear-ended a Chevrolet sport-utility vehicle that had slowed to make a left turn into a driveway. The impact forced the SUV into the westbound lane, where it was hit by an oncoming delivery truck, BlueBag Media reported.

The SUV driver and her female passenger were flown to Miami Valley Hospital. Their names and conditions were not available. The drivers of the semi and delivery truck were not injured.

UPDATE @ 4:22 p.m.: U.S. 36 will be shut down at least another hour because of the car-semitrailer accident.

FIRST REPORT

A medical helicopter is taking two people seriously injured this afternoon in a crash between a car and semi on U.S. 36.

The crash was reported around 3 p.m. in the 8000 block of U.S. 36 east in Gettysburg.

CareFlight took two people to Miami Valley Hospital.

According to initial reports, the two people were trapped in their car before crews arrived.

The names and conditions of those in the crash, and the cause of the collision was not available.
