Homeowner OK after fire in basement

UPDATE @ 4:30 p.m.

Kettering Battalion Chief Brian Beaver said the homeowner was watching television when he heard a smoke alarm.

He was on the first floor and looked in his basement where he saw heavy smoke billowing out.

He got out of the house OK and called 911.

Beaver said his crew encountered flames and smoke in the basement, which was significantly damaged.

The family will have to find another place to stay until the damages can be cleaned up and fixed.

Crews in Kettering battled a house fire this afternoon in the 4400 block of Lotz Road.

Smoke was reported in the basement of the home around 3 p.m.
