Semi driver cited in crash that shut down I-75 South

UPDATE @ 10:40 p.m.: All lanes of I-75 South were reopened about 6:15 p.m., according to the Dayton post Ohio Highway Patrol.

I-75 South reopened partially after a two-hour shut down.

Two semitrailers and two cars were involved in a chain reaction crash, but luckily there were no serious injuries, According to Sgt Jeff Kramer of the Ohio Highway Patrol Dayton Post.

Kramer said the crash started when a semi carrying food products drifted from the right lane and into the path of a car. The car’s driver took evasive action, which caused a second semi, carrying auto parts, to veer and overturn, blocking all three lanes.

A fourth vehicle was struck and the driver was taken to a hospital suffering from minor injuries, Kramer said. A child also in the vehicle was not hurt.

Both semis were leaking a lot of diesel fuel, which combined with the large debris field caused the highway to be shut down for extensive cleanup. A hazardous materials crew responded as well as the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency because of concerns the fuel would end up in a nearby creek.

Kramer said the driver of the semi that caused the chain reaction crash will be cited. He said it’s possible speed in light of the weather conditions may have been a factor. He advised highway commuters to slow down during weather events.

FIRST REPORT

Southbound Interstate 75 remains closed as of 4:45 p.m. near the Northwoods Boulevard exit hours after two semitrailers collided.

One semi crashed off the side of the interstate, and another crashed onto its side, blocking several lanes.

The crash is near the Montgomery County and Miami County line.

It’s unknown if anyone was injured.
