Dayton police investigate double-fatal crash

UPDATE@7:14 p.m.:

A man who died in a car crash early Sunday morning served a year in prison for his involvement in a Dayton police officer shooting in 2012.

Deontay Cochran, 24, was killed as was 24-year-old Anthony Graham Jr. in a car crash at the intersection of North Gettysburg Avenue and Oakridge Drive in Dayton. The two were passengers in a 2014 Toyota Camry. The driver of that vehicle was driving west on Oakridge Drive and failed to stop at a red light at North Gettysburg, striking a gray 2009 Chevy Malibu.

Witness Tonya Moore told a 911 dispatcher both Cochran and Graham were “so smashed up and banged up that I don’t know if they’re alive in there,” when she rushed over to help. Both died Sunday from their injuries.

Cochran served a year in prison for carrying a concealed weapon and resisting arrest in connection with an April 2012 shooting near Leo II’s bar in Trotwood. He was shot in the arm by an undercover Dayton officer after he was seen with a gun near the bar. The undercover officer was accidentally shot in the torso by a Trotwood police sergeant in the process. The officer survived the shooting.

Following Sunday’s crash, the driver of the Camry was injured and was being treated at an area hospital Monday. His identity was not released. The driver of the Malibu was treated and released. Dayton police’s traffic services unit is still investigating, but Maj. David Wolford said it’s likely the driver of the Camry will face charges. A Montgomery County prosecutor will decide what charges those may be once the investigation concludes.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at (937) 333-1359.

UPDATE @12:30 p.m.:

Dayton Police released their reconstruction report of the accident Monday morning. The vehicle Graham and Cochran were riding in when they died was westbound on Oakridge Drive when the driver failed to stop at the red light in the intersection of North Gettysburg Avenue. They then struck a car that was driving north on North Gettysburg Avenue, according to the police report.

Both vehicle travelled to the northwest side of the street and came to a stop, according to the police. But a 911 caller told a dispatcher that both cars struck a tree and someone crawled out of the window.

One passenger died at the scene and the other died at Miami Valley Hospital.

Officials have not identified the driver of either car.
