WSU student robbed at gunpoint in residence hall

Update@5:25 p.m.:

A former Wright State University student was reportedly robbed at gunpoint in a residence hall Tuesday night.

Joshua Roberts was in the basement of Fawcett Hall at about 8:30 p.m. when a male asked him for a cigarette, he told police. As Roberts handed the man the cigarette, the suspect pointed a handgun at his face and demanded cash and other valuables, according to a police report.

The suspect reportedly took Roberts’ Citizen Eco Drive watch, $35 in cash and his IPhone 5. The total value of the stolen property is more than $800, according to the report.

The alleged suspect fled on foot toward the library annex after the robbery. He’s described as a 6-foot-2 male, and was wearing a black zip-up hoodie at the time of the crime, the police report said.

There are surveillance cameras in Fawcett Hall, but the robbery took place in an area that is off camera, officials said.

“It is surprising to have an incident like this happen inside of a building,” said Wright State University Police Chief David Finnie. “We take reports like this very seriously.”

Police tracked the stolen IPhone to the 1600 block of West Stewart Street in Dayton until it was turned off. The Dayton Police Department searched the area but were unable to find anything, according to a police report.

Wright State students receive email alerts when crime happens on campus.

Freshman Constantine Tolias, who is majoring in international studies, said he was not concerned when he heard about the armed robbery.

“That kind of stuff doesn’t happen here that often,” he said. “I think it was an isolated event.”

The Clery Act, which is the federal law that require colleges and universities to disclose information about crime on their campuses, shows that there were two reported robberies at Wright State from 2011 to 2013.

There was a total of 112 arrests made on campus during those years, including one weapons charge. Students were disciplined for weapons violations, however, a total of six times: twice in 2012 and four times in 2013.

Tuesday’s robbery was the first on campus this school year, Finnie said.
