Victim, car found shot outside hospital

UPDATE @ 5:55 p.m.

Dayton police are questioning a conceal-carry permit holder who they say shot a man he reportedly caught breaking into cars early Monday morning.

The CCW holder, a 26-year-old Dayton resident police verified is properly licensed, called 911 around 2:30 a.m. to report that a man was breaking into his sister’s car in the 100 block of South Woodward Avenue. The man told a dispatcher he saw the suspect get into a vehicle and then drove up to another car and attempted to break in. That’s when he said the alleged thief saw him and brandished a firearm.

“When I came outside he started shooting at me,” the CCW holder told the dispatcher. “I have my CCW and when he shot I shot back.”

The CCW holder said after the exchange of gunfire, the suspect drove off in a Buick. Another neighbor on Woodward Avenue called 911 to report hearing nine to 10 shots fired. A few minutes later the Miami Valley Hospital campus police called Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center to report they had a gunshot victim run into their emergency room, and that he’d left a Buick parked on South Main Street in the construction zone, according to 911 and police records.

Officers processed the vehicle left by the shooting victim, which had several bullet holes in it and sustained significant damage to its tires. Lt. Wendy Stiver said it’s believed that victim is the man who was fired upon on South Woodward Avenue. However, she said detectives are still collecting evidence, and it’s too soon to determine if the shooting victim was armed or fired a weapon, and if this is a case of self-defense.

“At some point when the investigation is completed, charges may be filed. It is way too early to determine what charges will be filed against whom,” Stiver said.

The shooting victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was listed in stable condition Monday, according to police.
