Tennessee man sentenced in Mason VFW assault

A 26-year-old Morristown, Tennessee, man who pleaded guilty to assault after instigating a fight at the Mason VFW lodge must complete drug treatment as part of his sentence.

Zachariah Purcell was sentenced Wednesday in Warren County Common Pleas Court to three years of community control, which includes an inpatient substance abuse program. After he is discharged, he will be on house arrest for 90 days and pay restitution for one victim for medical bills before he returns to Tennessee, according to a news release issued by Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell.

Purcell pleaded guilty March 25 to aggravated assault, a felony, and misdemeanor assault stemming from a Jan. 24 fight. Purcell entered the Mason VFW, but refused to leave when asked because he was not a member.

Purcell assaulted two veterans, striking one with a pool stick and punching another before he fled out a back door. Mason police found Purcell after tracking him with a K-9 officer.
