IDs released of suspects in Dayton drug raid

UPDATE @ 10:30 a.m.

According to the police report and Montgomery County Jail records, 18-year-old Dejuan Brookshire was arrested and is being held on suspicion of heroin possession and tampering with evidence.

A second man was summoned to court on weapons allegations: 32-year-old Dwane Berg Jr., according to the police report.

Officers found trace evidence of cocaine in addition to seizing heroin and marijuana. The report also states four cell phones, two guns and a security system with two cameras were seized.

FIRST REPORT

Neighbor complaints led police to raid a home on Dayton’s West Side Monday morning, seizing drugs, guns and arresting three people.

The names of those arrested were not available Monday, but police said one man was charged with drug possession while another man and a woman were arrested on warrants after being found inside a home in the 300 block of Delaware Avenue. Dayton police’s drug enforcement unit served a search warrant there around 8:30 a.m. and initially took eight people into custody. A child was also released to the custody of her mother after the raid, said Sgt. John Sullivan.

Officers recovered a large amount of heroin and several pounds of marijuana, along with cash and three rifles. A pitbull and four puppies were also found, but were left at the residence. Eight people were inside, including the three who were arrested, but all denied knowledge of drug activity. Sullivan said the man charged with drug possession was seen by officers attempting to destroy evidence before he was arrested.

“One of the guys, as soon as we entered the door, tried to flush it by tossing it in the sink,” he said. “But of course he missed and we were able to recover that heroin.”

Police said it’s likely the drugs were being distributed out of the home to other dealers and users. The case is still being investigated and more charges could follow, officers said. For now, a nuisance abatement has been issued for the property, meaning those inside the house will be ordered to leave since the residence was being used for drug activity, Sullivan said.

Neighbor complaints on the Crime Stoppers tip line led police to raid the home, Sullivan said. To make an anonymous call to police, call 222-7867.
