Suspect car in Dayton police pursuit crashes

UPDATE @ 11:25 p.m.: The car that crashed on North James H. McGee Boulevard during a police pursuit that "was less than 30 seconds" was believed to have been taken in an armed robbery apparently set up by a fake meeting created online, Dayton Lt. Eric Henderson said.

Two males had gone to the 2900 block of Prescott Avenue for a meeting with two other males when the victims were confronted by two individuals who had guns. They took property off the victims and their car, the lieutenant said.

“It’s likely at this point they were set up to be robbed,” Henderson said.

Police came across the car and were following it when they discovered its driver had caused an accident. Henderson, who noted the speeds of the vehicles had not yet been determined in the preliminary investigation, said the police pursuit “was less than 30 seconds.”

The driver of the suspect car and the driver of the car he hit were injured in the collision on North James H. McGee Boulevard near Kammer Avenue, Henderson said. Police apprehended the driver of the suspect car not long after he tried to run from police. He was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital. The driver of the other car was injured as well and taken to a different hospital.

The passenger in the suspect car had not been apprehended and no police found no weapons in the car, Henderson said. Both suspects were said to have been disrobing as they ran from police.

Because there was a pursuit that ended in a vehicle accident, investigators with the Dayton Police Department’s Professional Standards Bureau and officers with the traffic services unit were on scene to make sure police department policies and procedures were followed, Henderson said.

The findings of that investigation will be issued at a later date.

FIRST REPORT

One person has been taken into custody following the crash of a car, carrying two people suspected in a robbery, that was being followed by police.

Dayton officers closed a stretch of North James H. McGee Boulevard, from Hoover to Rosedale avenues, about 9:15 p.m. as part of their investigation of the incident.

A sergeant tells us the car slammed into another vehicle as police were following it near McGee and Kammer Avenue.

We’re told the driver was apprehended and has been taken to Good Samaritan Hospital and the passenger took off running in the area of North Orchard Avenue.

The passenger was said to have been disrobing as he ran, we’re told.

A K-9 unit was requested and brought to search the area.

We have a crew on scene and we’ll update this report as we get information.
